Overview
Please do not rely on facts & figures below - please double
check everything with Township website or your Commissioner
In addition to other Open Space purchases,
Montgomery County (in perhaps 06 or 07? ) acquired
100 million for its most recent Open Space Program . The plan was for 1/2 of
that to go back to the townships and 1/2 to be used by the
county.
Abington's portion was 2.95 million which required a
20% match by the township in order to use. ( or elsewhere it was
reported that the total program is 3.7 million ...? )
Some of our Open Space areas include :
Jackson Park
off Meadowbrook Rd just East of Hampton
10 acres ( Bought for somewhere around $600,000 ? with
80/20 Open Space grant funds
No really access exists from the main corridor to this park,
Meadowbrook Rd, which prevents residents from really using it .
Neighbors can
Summerford on Forrest Ave across from Alverthorpe
Park
5 Acres? (Bought for something near 2
million?) Many trees will stay - but ball fields will be
interspersed
The Grove Property - 1385 Easton Rd
Do not rely on any of these figures - but

Approved for purchase at $485,000 this was approved in
January 10, 2008
( $97,000 of this is township
money $388,000 of this is County open space grant)
History of the prop :
March 12, 2007. it had been sold to a new owner for $276,914
2008 Commissioners bought it for $485,000 this was approved in
January 10, 2008

An appraisal came in in February of '08 for $555,000
Feb 4-08 – $2, 700 approval for environmental study

65,000 is estimated cost of razing 3 buildings - applying also
for 80/20 split with the county
It will be deed restricted Open Space – dog park is on part of
it or the 9
acres behind it

The Ardsley Wildlife Sanctuary-
off Maple Ave.
the study was done by land concepts, Inc. in 2008, and it was determined
that this area was not suitable to put ball fields.
It was suitable for nature trails and very possibly the
driveway. That leads into it from Maple Avenue, could be
expanded at me and to include parking for six to eight cars to
accommodate more access. There is a variety of different
flora and fauna in this area, including an abundance of deer.
